War Lock

The Dare to Dream Program filly Performing Spells had been a hard-knocking producer, despite only being assessed to be "good" broodmare and nicking a "B" with a wide variety of stallions.  When tried with Held High for her Year 33 foal, the grade was a B+, so the mating wasn't a difficult decision.  That offspring, War Lock, was an ordinary "hard to tell" galloper and unimpressive work horse as a yearling, and into his 2yo season.  He was galloped a week before his Week 9 debut, and it was shocking that he had suddenly jumped three levels to "scary good" -- being the only Thoroughbred of that quality ever owned by the farm.

He went right to work with proving the validity of the label, winning three starts in Europe with front-running ease, including the Grade 1 London Futurity, thereby making him Magic Raven's first homebred Thoroughbred to earn a SIMMY championship.   He faltered in the Steward's Cup, but got right back on the Grade 1 winning track at three; in fact, was the farm's first (and, so far, only) Thoroughbred multiple Grade 1 stakes winner.  That year, he won five stakes, including four Grade 1s, and was named division champion for the South Pacific.

In his first start at four, War Lock was narrowly beaten in a three-horse finish.  He won his next start easily, and that put his earnings at $966,500, which made him the all-time most successful horse ever campaigned by Magic Raven Ranch.  His very next start, his victory made him the first horse ever campaigned in the RLM colors to go over the million dollar mark in earnings.  He was coming off a five-race win streak for the Steward's Cup Turf Mile and was a heavy favorite.  It was Magic Raven's peak success when he not only won, but did so going way by 5.5 lengths, with his career-best speed figure of 91 an astounding 13 points ahead of the second horse.

With his first start at five, War Lock became Magic Raven's first horse to win seven races in a row, first to win fifteen races, and first to win fourteen stakes races.  He wasn't quite as strong the remainder of the season, but made his swan song with a third place finish in the Steward's Cup, and retired as one of the greatest turf milers that the SIM has ever known. He owns nearly every statistic of accomplishment for Magic Raven Ranch.

The icing on the cake is that War Lock has been an excellent sire, with his most outstanding offspring being $2 million earner Incremental.  He is the sire of nearly 10% stakes winners, and his offspring has average earnings of more than $60,000.
